Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center

If you’re visiting the area and looking for something exciting and educational to do with the family, a tour of the Great Smoky Mountain Heritage Center is a must-stop destination for any trip to the Smoky Mountains. Opening to the public in 2006 the Heritage Center has been growing ever since and is dedicated to preserving the rich history of the Great Smoky Mountains. In this week’s blog, we would like to tell you all about the Heritage Center and how together we celebrate the cultural heritage of the Great Smoky Mountains!

Mission

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center preserves, interprets and shares the history and culture of the diverse peoples and Native Americans who have inhabited the Southern Appalachians, including the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It offers exhibitions and programs for educational and cultural enrichment.

Museum

The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is first and foremost a museum; a museum whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the unique history and rich culture of the people who inhabited the Great Smoky Mountains and the surrounding area.
While visiting the Heritage Center, you’ll have the opportunity to view the main gallery, home to our Native Americans of East Tennessee Collection and the East Tennessee Mountain Culture exhibits. Also housed in the main building is the National Parks Gallery, a tribute to the five National Parks of East Tennessee. Directly behind the main building is our Historic Village, which is a collection of historic buildings and barns brought to us from around the region. The Transportation Station houses an impressive display of modes of transportation ranging from mules to wagons to Model T’s and more.

Permanent Exhibits

National Parks Gallery: In cooperation and partnership with the 5 National Parks of East Tennessee, we are honored to announce the opening of our National Parks Gallery. Explore the artifacts and history of Big South Fork, Obed Wild & Scenic River, Cumberland Gap, Andrew Johnson and of course…Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Native Americans of East Tennessee (Main Gallery): Find out what archaeologists have learned about pre-historic life in Tuckaleechee Cove, including displays of pottery, stone tools, and other artifacts found in one of the largest archaeological dig projects in Tennessee history.

East Tennessee Mountain Culture (Main Gallery): You’ll see a log cabin made of hand-hewn logs and learn about one-room schoolhouses and grist mills, while cultivating an appreciation for the resilience and ingenuity of pioneer people of the Smoky Mountains.

Transportation Station: Our latest exhibit gallery, Transportation Station, allows the Heritage Center an opportunity to display our extensive collection of 19th and 20th century vehicles.  We will also now be able to bring in guest pieces from automobile collectors in the area as well.  The exhibit focuses on local modes of transportation through the past century and a half.

Historic Village

As you step back in time with your visit to the Heritage Center, you’ll have the opportunity to wander through our Historic Village.

The Historic Village is home to 13 historic buildings that have been furnished according to the period in which they were built. Some of these buildings were de-constructed, transported to the Heritage Center and then put back together for our guests to enjoy.

In our efforts to preserve and protect the heritage of our region, we have made every attempt to showcase buildings, cabins, and barns that are authentic and true reflections of East Tennessee.
